BACnet to the Cloud: From Concept to Reality

This session will feature real case studies of OEMs and integrators that have automatically discovered and securely connected BACnet-based products and control networks to the cloud. Applications include: remotely monitoring and supporting boilers, humidifiers, lighting controllers, generator sets, power meters and more; and integrating control or “Operational Technology” (OT) networks to IT management infrastructure.

Varun Nagaraj
Sierra Monitor Corporation
Varun joined Sierra Monitor Corporation in July 2014, from Echelon Corporation (ELON) where he was senior vice president and general manager of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) division. Previously, he served as president and chief executive officer of NetContinuum, a leading provider of Web Application Firewalls, acquired by Barracuda Networks (CUDA) in 2007. Varun served as vice president of product development and marketing for Extreme Networks (EXTR) during their transition from proprietary to merchant silicon; and as executive vice president of marketing and customer delivery for Ellacoya Networks. Varun worked for PRTM, a leading management consulting firm focused on product and operations strategy, from 1995 to 2001 in various positions including associate, manager, principal and partner. He started his career in 1988 at Hewlett Packard as an engineer. Varun received his Electrical Engineering degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay; a Master of Science degree from North Carolina State University; and his Master of Business Administration degree from Boston University.

Unify Your Building and Reduce Energy Consumption with BACnet

Commercial and industrial buildings are responsible for more energy use and CO2 emissions than any other single source on the planet today. On average, HVAC and lighting represent approximately 68% of a buildings energy consumption. As BACnet has become the predominate force in the integration of automation systems, a new capability has arisen: the ability to unify the biggest energy consumers into one centralized system and thereby gain more control. This presentation will cover the current commercial and industrial building integration landscape and discuss how maximizing efficiency revolves around the unification of building systems under one BACnet umbrella. Learning objectives include: typical energy consumption in commercial and industrial buildings; how BACnet is changing the automation landscape to give greater control; and how unifying systems can achieve greater energy savings.

BACnet in an IoT World

BACnet is introducing new features that will help facility managers to implement an Internet of Things (IoT) strategy for their facilities. IoT is important to facility managers (FMs) as devices such as chillers, boilers, lights, fire alarm, security and elevators come with network smarts onboard so FMs can monitor the health, status and energy consumption through their front end software applications. All of these devices are now either native BACnet devices or use proprietary protocols that can be converted easily to BACnet. BACnet is introducing BACnet/IT which is an upgrade to BACnet/IP that will allow IT to manage BACnet devices as they manage computers and printers. Enhanced IT friendliness will simplify the process of “getting the thing on the internet”. The network port object type will allow for easier configuration of a device’s communications properties. The Applications Profile Working Group is working on a data dictionary that will allow device suppliers to provide data on the device to the FMs front end software application without the time consuming process of getting manuals that describe the points found in the device. Mr. Wichenko will show some examples of how to set up and configure Modbus devices in a Modbus to BACnet gateway so they can be managed using the FM’s front end software application. He will also show how to use the onboard metering capabilities of devices to allow for equipment metering in an energy dashboard tool for use by senior management.

Grant Wichenko is President of Appin Associates, a Mechanical Engineering firm that specializes in designing and specifying BACnet based BASs. Mr. Wichenko is a voting member of SSPC 135, the BACnet Committee and SGPC 13, the BAS Specification Committee. He is chair of the Application Profile Working Group. He is a non voting member of SPC 201P, the Facility SmartGrid Information Model (FSGIM) Committee.
