Remembering Mike Newman

With deep sadness, BACnet International is sharing the news of the passing of H. Michael "Mike" Newman, widely recognized as the founding father of the BACnet protocol (ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 135). Mike died at his home in Ithaca, NY, on March 4, 2020.

Mike's vision and tenacious effort to standardize a data communication protocol for building automation will never be forgotten. His legacy will live on through the BACnet community and through the world-wide application of the BACnet standard.

Mike, along with Steve Bushby, hosted a wonderful session on "A BACnet Retrospective from People Who Were There" at the BACnet International Testing Symposium in 2018. If you'd like to hear the history of BACnet in Mike's words you can access the video here.

You can also see a short tribute  to Mike from the other BACnet committee chairs, past and present.

Mike's absence will be keenly felt in the BACnet community and we send our deepest sympathies to Mike's family and friends.
